Cruelty-Free Makeup: What are we putting on our skin?
By Lex Short
Big brands we use everyday aren't required to advertise whether they are cruelty free or not. So it can be difficult to identify which items you use on the reg test on animals.
Traditionally, animals have been used in tests that can be harmful to demonstrate the effective and safe use of products, in order for the products to be approved for human use. But even so, the results shown on animals may not be the same on humans.

However, there can be an alternative approach to testing makeup that does not involve animals without consent and possibly causing them harm. Safety can be assured by using approved tests that do not involve animals. Similarly, by sticking to ingredients that producers know are safe and effective can result in products being released that have not caused any harm to animals and are perfectly safe to use.

On the positive side, more and more brands are coming out as cruelty free (as we are all glad to hear) and opening up a world of new, improved make up that is ethically responsible. For UK cosmetic companies, animal testing has been banned since 1998, but with the accessibility of oversea brands, its difficult to understand which brands are actually cruelty-free.

To help you out, we've compiled a list of the BEST make up brands that do not test on animals, and are still great for your skin. So you can use your products freely without the worry.

BARE MINERALS
Bare Minerals don't test on animals, at all. They happily share that there are no animals involved of the production of any of their products. "Please feel at ease when using bareMinerals products as we do not test any products on animals. We also do not work with any manufacturers that do animal testing." Meaning you can use any of their items guilt-free, whilst also having amazing skin.

Bareminerals is an amazing brand in terms of social and ethical responsibility. They, just recently, released a range called Gen Nude, adding over 100 colours of lipstick to suit women, and men, of any skin tone and type.

Bare minerals, you're doing it right!
ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS
Another brand that clearly does not test on animals is Anastasia Beverly Hills (informally known as ABH). The brand is popular among celebs these days, and its nice to see our idols wearing and supporting these cruelty free companies. The brand was originally sold in Sephore stores only but now you can purchase their products on websites such as BeautyBay.com.

DOVE
You'll be glad to know that trusty dove is also cruelty free. See, theres way more than you think! Dove in fact has been free from animal testing for 30 years and are certified by PETA - one of the worlds largest animal rights organisations - cruelty free. Dove hope to "inspire others in the industry to follow and become certified too". Dove even have, on their homepage, their logo paired with a silhouette of a rabbit, displayed above. How cute! And as Dove say, Real beauty is cruelty-free.
KAT VON D
Kat Von D herself recently spoke to Universe and the launch of her new range - Fetish Collection, in which she openly raised the question of why other brands weren't acting against animal cruelty and regulating their products. As you know Kat Von D is a strong animal lover herself and prides her brand as "100% animal test free" and it will always be that way. We love the way she isn't afraid to be controversial and directly question other brands techniques. The majority of her products are also vegan, which is a massive bonus. Available at Debenhams, Kat Von D's products are a must have.
SOAP AND GLORY
Soap and Glory are not afraid to share their strict guidelines when it comes to animal testing. They show this by supporting an organisation, called 'FRAME' (which stands for Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments), in the effort to eliminate the reliance on animal testing within the cosmetic industry.

The brand are most favourite for their skin and body products, such as my fav the Sugar Crush Body Scrub. But as well as all of the skin care-type products, their make up and even brushes are cruelty-free. Way to go Soap and Glory!
ELF COSMETICS
Elf Cosmetics was founded in 2004 with one mission. "Make luxurious, high-quality beauty products available to everyone." Which they massively achieved. But another bonus about elf is that they are 100% vegan in all aspects of production and the ingredients used.

Elf are committed to being cruelty-free and are linked with 5 like-minded influencers (@logicalharmony, @jkissamakeup, @msjasminerose, @weylie and @cosmobhayley.) As well as having amazingly affordable products and being vegan, elf has recently introduced that every 10% of proceedings raised from their products will be donated to animal charities of your choice. Not only does your money buy you a product, but goes worldwide to helping animals become free from testing. Nice work Elf.

How to Cornrow Braid:
Step 2
-
Separate the forward crown of your model's head, angling from the top of the ears upward and around and tie the bottom two third with a hair tie.
-
Further section the forward their section into however many sections you dear for your cornrows, (we recommend 3-5 cornrows per head)
-
Cornrow:
-
Split your section into equal sections and braid the far right piece underneath the middle and in between the left and middle sections.
-
Then, braid the far left piece under the new middle, and in between the right and middle section.
-
Repeat this however whilst picking up a small section during each braid, this will therefore create a cornrow, where the raid sits onto of the hair.
4. Once you have braided all of the hair, tie securely with an elastic and being the other two or three sections.
5. Once all of the braids have been completed, release the bottom two third of the hair down and style how you please. In the tutorial we curled our models hair, and you can find this step-by-step tutorial further down on the page. Enjoy cornrowing!
